What’s Actually Going On Between Voight & Chapman: “She Calls Him Out”

If you think there’s some sort of connection brewing between Sgt. Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and Assistant State Attorney Nina Chapman (Sara Bues), you’re definitely on the right track.

Chicago P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan confirmed to NBC Insider that the two have “such an interesting dynamic” following Season 11’s Voight-centered Episode 6, “Survival”. Chapman played a major part in helping the Intelligence Unit investigate an abduction. She even showed up at Voight’s house in the final scene, discovering that the cop had brought the teen abductee from the case, Noah, home to stay with him.

“You ask me for help, you bring me in, and then you push me away,” a bewildered Chapman told Voight. “It’s like you don’t know whether you wanna be alone on your island or not.”

I don’t know what the hell is happening, and I don’t think [Voight] does either.”

We’ve seen the two’s complicated relationship play out since Chapman first joined the show in Season 10. Voight even helped her keep a relationship she had with a late CI quiet, while she discovered the sergeant’s tendency to go “off the books” with his cases. But are they platonic or romantic? Even Sigan has a tough time answering that question.

“I don’t know what the hell is happening, and I don’t think [Voight] does either,” Sigan says. “What’s just so interesting and fun to play with is that they have a chemistry, and so far it’s been very much a work chemistry. And it’s been something that he trusts her in a lot of ways. I think she’s proven herself to him and vice versa. But there’s also, to me, always this level of interest in each other. They have this interest and this trust that just doesn’t come naturally, probably to either of them.”

Sigan also pointed out that Chapman has the power to do something nobody else in Intelligence can.

Jason Bowen, Asa Chapman, Hailey Upton, and Hank Voight discuss around a large table in an office on Chicago P.D. Season 11 Episode 1.

“I love that her as a character is confident enough to call him out on things… He gets blinders on, and especially when he’s working a case where he can often not take in what’s happening around him, and not see how his actions are going to affect the people around him. And so I love that she calls him out on that… I think takes Voight off guard.”

So is it only a matter of time before Burzek aren’t the only love story on Chicago P.D.? We’ll just have to wait and see.
